We understand the use of John Williams’ music. we understand Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. We even understand the updated ride. But this small change for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge it feels kind of antithetical to all of that, and it’s kind of confusing.
this week, Star Wars-Themed section of Disneyland in Anaheim, California, traveled back in time. As originally intended experience a certain world between The Last Jedi and The rise of resistancethe park shifted its timeline to one side to include the original trilogy. This means instead of Kylo Ren and Vi Moradi, we have Darth Vader. Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. Music designed to make you feel like you’re on the planet Batuu has become music meant to make you feel like you’re in it. Star Wars.
Controversial to some, but you can understand why Disney did it. It is a more easily understood experience. Photos of the new additions have been flooding social media over the past few days, and one in particular caught our eye. The third picture below, to be specific.

Why is this a big deal? Honestly, it’s not indeed. Just this When Galaxy’s Edge opensone of the best things about it was that none of the merchandise had “Star Wars” written on it. You should have been inside Star Wars. Why would you buy something that says “Star Wars” if you’re in it? The dolls of characters like Rey or Darth Vader were there because they are famous, mythical people in that world. You created a droid because we all need droids to help us in our lives. It was a bold but incredibly impressive swing.
Dok-Ondar’s House of Antiquesthe shop in the pictures above was the pinnacle of it all. It was a shop designed solely to sell items that Dok-Ondar in the universe had collected over the years. You can buy a lightsaber inspired by your favorite heroes here. Holocron or kyber crystal to unlock the secrets of the galaxy. It was common Star Wars paradise
In recent years, even before this timeline change, those guardrails had begun to come off. Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge stores sold toys with “Star Wars” written on them. heck. To be fair, there were already Funko Pops there too. We are not 100% sure. But seeing Funko Pops at Dok-Ondar this week right after the change feels like an extreme rejection of those original ideas.
Changing the timeline is one thing. Playing music from a movie is another thing. But bringing in the goods that have become synonymous with the uber-commercialization of pop culture is another. It’s just a huge disappointment.
Will seeing Funko Pops matter to 99% of the people who visit Dok-Ondar’s? Of course not. It may not matter to you either. But if, like us, you’re someone who has been and continues to be enthralled by its boldness and excitement Star Wars theme park area exists, just one of the unfortunate changes that make the park’s ongoing homogenization all too apparent.
