We learned recently Obsession Director Curry Barker will bring the new one to life The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Movie for A24. Already, he’s been teasing some ideas about what to do with the dormant slasher franchise, and in doing so, offering some insight into its history.
Speaking to Total Film, Barker confirmed his plans to do something “different” than before Texas make movies and build existing ones. One thing he wants to understand, for example, is “the family’s concerns. I want to believe in the craziness of what’s going on there—there’s really messed up stuff going on at this farm. I really feel like there’s a lot of unrealized potential for this concept.”

Barker loves the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but admitted that it is actually his favorite entry in the series 2003 remake. Directed by Marcus Nispel, the film, which, like the original 1974 film, focused on Leatherface and his family terrorizing a group of young men, was a financial success that led to other horror franchises rebooting themselves. Reactions to it were mixed at the time, with Barker clearly leaning more towards the positive, calling it “actually a decent remake. It was like the first horror movie I saw as a kid.”
With this background information, his desire to explore the Hewitt family makes a little more sense: Barker feels the idea “hasn’t been (that) included,” so of course he’ll jump into it.
