Google is set to let Gemini-powered agents take control of your computer and “organize your files” in a rival to Claude Cowork.
Currently, the Gemini app for macOS consists of two main features: a native chat interface reminiscent of a web app, and an alt-space shortcut to open Gemini from anywhere. The latter has the advantage of allowing you to share your current window with Gemini, offering an AI visual context of your current task.
Upon closer inspection by our APK Insight team, it appears that Google has plans to expand Gemini’s availability on the Mac through a new agent-driven desktop experience. Those who have tried Claude Cowork in recent months are likely familiar with the tool’s ability to directly control your computer to perform specific tasks.

The first three instructions heavily emphasize the ability to use Gemini to organize files from your Mac and import them into Google Workspace apps. Each of these are desk stakes for productivity in a post-Claude Cowork world. Under the hood, they’ll use Screen Access and Accessibility to let Gemini see your screen and control your mouse/keyboard. Meanwhile, the fourth command takes the focus away from your local computer and onto Google apps like Meet, Docs, and Gmail.
Taken as a collection, these tips signal to Google that Gemini can do more work on your behalf. However, it is interesting to imagine that this Gemini agent for macOS will have a wider set of capabilities than what is available for Android. For now, only a small number of Android devices like the Galaxy S26 series can ask Gemini to automate simple in-app tasks like ordering food.
In comparison, Google is preparing to make Gemini for macOS a worthy competitor to Claude Cowork.
