Microsoft Teams meetings, file and application sharing, etc. supports real-time collaboration and communication with messaging and video conferencing functions for Microsoft usually does a great job of keeping the platform up-to-date with sophisticated features designed to make communication seamless.
However, it’s hard to ignore users complaining about the app’s availability feature. For context, it’s meant to let other people in your organization know your availability: Available, Busy, In Meeting, On Call, Do Not Disturb, Be Right Back, Away, and Offline.

Technically, this shouldn’t be a big deal as long as you’re still working. Such collaboration tools are often vulnerable to downtime anyway, which can significantly impact productivity.
This opens up another discussion about organizations over-relying on collaboration tools, but that’s a story for another day.
A quick overview r/remote work subreddit is active Reddit It reveals that some bosses are apparently converted Team Status Policeconstantly checking the availability of employees.

“Microsoft Teams is the worst way to track someone! It changes your status to Away after only 5 minutes of no mouse movement, even when you’re deep in your work,” another user complained. “This disrupts the focus of millions of remote workers every day.”
“Walk away from your laptop for 1 second and MS Teams will say you’ve left the country” another user joked.
“Teams see you go for water and report missing persons immediately” the jokes keep writing themselves. “Two minutes is crazy…sorry I blinked and was suddenly ‘away’?” Another user complained. “At that point, it’s not a status indicator, it’s a control tool with credibility issues.”
I’ve reached out to Microsoft for comment on the matter and will update this post when more information becomes available. Elsewhere, The teams were still in placeespecially about the “Workplace Auto Update” feature, which has been misconstrued as a micromanagement and employee control tool.
However, Microsoft denied the claims, revealing that the tool is designed to foster collaboration. “Workplace is an extension of online presence signaling and business hours control in Microsoft Teams. Microsoft 365 calendar” Microsoft clarified the issue. “By bringing business hours, business location and online presence together, users can more easily find out where colleagues work and if they’re available to connect.”
