While mid-range Android phones have gotten better over the years, lags are still pretty common. With the new Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chips, Qualcomm says latency should be reduced, along with some other improvements.
Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 are the latest versions of Qualcomm’s mid-range chipsets. These are Moto G, Nothing Phone A series, etc. are the types of chips you’d expect to find in something like
Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 has a 2+6-core architecture with two performance cores up to 2.4GHz and six efficiency cores up to 2.0GHz. The chip supports FHD+ displays up to 144Hz, 5G networks below 6GHz, Wi-Fi 5 and cameras up to 108MP. Some notable improvements this year include a GPU that Qualcomm says offers 77% better performance than the last generation and support for 90Hz gaming. On the network side, it supports Dual SIM Dual Active (DSDA) 5G + 5G/4G connectivity.
As for Snapdragon 6 Gen 5, the chip has 4 + 4 cores with four performance cores up to 2.6 GHz and four efficient cores up to 2.0 GHz. It supports Wi-Fi 7, FHD+ displays up to 144Hz and cameras up to 200MP. It also supports night vision with AI for the camera and Bluetooth 6.0. Qualcomm touts support for Adaptive Performance Engine 4.0, which enables “smooth, long-lasting gaming” from a 21% more powerful GPU.
Qualcomm also notes that both of these chips feature “Snapdragon Smooth Motion UI,” a new chipset-level improvement that Qualcomm says will deliver “seamless navigation.” The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 benefits from 20% faster app launches and 18% less screen stuttering, while the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 sees improvements of 43% and 25%, respectively.
Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 will first appear on Honor and Redmi devices, while Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 will appear on Oppo, Realme and Redmi devices.
