Arrowhead Game Studios’ Xbox, PC and PS5 PvE co-op shooter Helldivers 2 Still going strong two years after its release in early 2024, it’s had several pendulum swings between “it’s so over” and “we’re so back” in its lifetime — and now, it’s experiencing one of its sharpest declines ever.
Although he is considered the player of the game holds steadyThe latest reviews of Helldivers 2 Steam at the time of writing it has fallen to “Mostly Negative”, with only 38% of the 10,169 reviews of the game posted over the past few weeks being positive. The flood of negative ratings reflects the community’s sentiment towards the shooter, with many fans angry and disappointed with Arrowhead’s handling of the experience.
i think this particular review sums up how players feel: “Lightning strikes in a bottle and you decide to pop the cap. You’re consistently plucking defeat from the jaws of victory, and at this point it doesn’t feel random anymore,” writes Steam user Libby. “The balancing is erratic. Weapons fluctuate between feeling incredible and being completely useless, with no consistency or clear design direction. Enemies flash while player tools are nerfed, and each update cancels the last one instead of building on it.”
As a frequent 700+ hour Helldivers 2 player myself, I have to say that I generally agree with the points players are making, although some people are a bit overdramatic. Still, it feels like there’s always a nerf to accompany every hobbyist, and when fixes arrive for existing ones, there are new or recoverable bugs.
It is worth noting that Arrowhead responded to the ongoing backlash Friday morningthis summer, promising new rewards and deeper campaigns to Helldivers 2’s community-driven metagame, along with promises of technical fixes, clearer, more descriptive patch notes, no hidden fixes, public beta testing for new updates, and new player progression systems beyond Level 150.
“Over the past few days, we’ve been listening to your feedback and seeing conversations among the Helldivers 2 community,” developers Arrowhead wrote. “Helldivers 2 is important to all of us, and we want to know more about what we’re working on and what’s coming next.”
All in all, these additions and improvements sound good, although Arrowhead was pretty vague about them and didn’t really give the community much to look forward to in concrete terms.
While I love Helldivers 2 and believe it to be an exceptional game, all of the aforementioned issues have marred the experience for countless players – and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t excited to play it lately. I hope Arrowhead can make some big and impressive improvements in the coming months.
