Apple is rumored to be doing something this year Code cleanup for iOS 27as well as having a renewed focus on stability and performance in general – on top of the many Apple Intelligence features. While that sounds good on its own, I think there’s a higher reason to expect an impressive stable release.
Love it or hate it, agent coding has significantly accelerated the software development process. Towards the end of last year, the models started to improve significantly, and we’re now at a point where you can reliably run a model on all tasks and run it mostly well. And according to Mark Gurman, Apple is in everything using anthropic models for product development.
Does this mean we’ll see a messy iOS 27? Probably not. I still expect Apple to have its usual level of hesitancy towards new technology. Engineers are still (hopefully) reviewing every line of code – but being allowed to use it internally is a great sign.
It’s incredibly exciting that engineers can use Claude to handle the low-hanging fruit and instead focus all of his energy on the hard problems. In particular, for the most part, iOS 27 will be light on features Outside of Siri and Apple Intelligence. In theory, this means that most teams will be able to double their performance.
Wrap it up
There have been many rumors over the year that Apple has been focusing on performance in iOS, and more often than not, it hardly ever comes to fruition. I’m feeling incredibly optimistic about it this year, though. Historically, Apple has been a bottleneck for software engineers, but if every engineer is more productive with AI, perhaps more will be done this year. One can hope.
