Apple today filed a petition with the European Commission criticizing proposals that would force Google to open up parts of Android to compete with artificial intelligence services. Here are the details.
Apple joins Google in opposing EU-requested changes to Android
Last month, the European Commission he suggested A series of measures designed to help Google comply with the region’s Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Among them were proposed changes that would give rival AI services better access to several Android capabilities and allow them to interact with installed apps to perform tasks such as sending email, ordering food or sharing photos.

At that time, the European Commission gave third parties until today, May 13, to submit their comments. The commission is expected to make its final decision in July on whether Google’s plan is DMA compliant.
Today, Apple released its opinion criticizing the EU’s proposed measures and warning that they could pose “privacy, safety and security” risks.

“The DMs (draft measures) raise urgent and serious concerns. If approved, they would pose significant risks to user privacy, safety and security, as well as device integrity and performance,” Apple said in a filing.
“These risks are particularly acute in the context of rapidly evolving artificial intelligence systems, whose capabilities, behaviors, and threat vectors remain unpredictable, as we now see time and time again.”
Apple also claimed that the European Commission was trying to redesign Android based on “less than three months of work,” overriding decisions made by Google over the years its own engineers had been developing the operating system.
