Google Messages is rolling out Tap to Draft for Smart Replies

as we saw beforeGoogle Messages adds a new “Find for Draft” behavior that saves you from accidental Smart Replies.

Going to Messages Settings > Suggestions reveals new preferences under Smart Reply. The image to the left of the switch is the current behavior. (It would benefit from a clearer settings interface.)

  • Tap to send: Tap Smart Replies to send an instant message
  • Tap to draft: Tap Smart Replies to update your message draft

The default setting is still “Click to Send” with this initial broadcast. Places the new “Find for Draft” suggestion in the text field for further editing before sending. It adds a good second step to avoid accidental postings.

We see the Tap function for Draft beta version 20260303_00_RC00 of Google Messages. Not on stable channel yet.
