If you’ve ever been in a relationship that didn’t quite work out as you’d hoped, the latest developments in the Apple-OpenAI collaboration may sound familiar. The AI revolution has pushed Big Tech into very speed dating and Apple ChatGPT the deal could turn out to be one of the messier ones. What once looked like an easy win for both sides hasn’t yielded the big positives expected of OpenAI, and the company is now considering legal options against Apple.
If Siri with Gemini is better on iPhone, would you consider switching to Android?

according to BloombergOpenAI lawyers are working with an outside law firm on possible options, including filing a breach of contract notice with Apple. Apparently, no final decision has been made, and the report notes that OpenAI still hopes to resolve the dispute without going to court.

The thing is, OpenAI expected more from the contract. When there is a partnership first announced in 2024this gave Apple a quick way to connect ChatGPT to Siri and Apple Intelligence. OpenAI reportedly expects its large Apple audience to translate into more ChatGPT subscriptions, deeper integration between Apple apps, and prominent placement in Siri.
Instead, OpenAI executives feel Apple’s implementation is limited, hard to find, and under-promoted. One unnamed OpenAI executive quoted in the report said, “We did everything from a product perspective. They didn’t do anything, and worse, they didn’t even make an honest effort.”
ChatGPT is currently available through Apple features such as Siri, Writing Tools, Visual Intelligence, and Image Playground, but Bloomberg OpenAI’s own research shows that Apple customers are more likely to use the standalone ChatGPT app than Apple’s in-house version. Part of the problem, according to the report, is that people often need to explicitly ask Siri for ChatGPT, while the answers within Apple’s interface are more limited than OpenAI’s own implementation.
The timing is also a bit awkward. Apple has already confirmed that it is working with Google Use Gemini models in Siri and Apple Intelligenceand Apple is also exploring a possible partnership with Anthropic. OpenAI says the broader AI lineup isn’t grounds for possible legal action because its Apple deal was never meant to be exclusive. Then again, perhaps ChatGPT was meant to be a cornerstone of the iOS experience until now.
Apple has already faced plenty of artificial intelligence, including delayed Siri features and a $250 million settlement for falsely advertising some Apple Intelligence capabilities. Everything in the tech world seems pretty rushed since ChatGPT hit the scene, so maybe we’ll see more of these reality checks popping up in the coming years.
