Genmoji debuted in iOS 18.2 as part of the initial Apple Intelligence rollout. The pitch was simple: using image generation models, users can quickly enter a command and make any emoji they want, and the system will try to use your request to create something that looks like an emoji. True, although sometimes there are great losses.
apple In iOS 26, it expanded it with deeper customization and the ability to mix two emojis, and it looks like the company will take it even further with Genmoji, which is offered in iOS 27:
Now, for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, Apple is planning a small change that it hopes will increase the adoption of this feature: Suggested Genmoji. The iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 keyboard settings say, “Featured Genmoji are created from your photos and your most frequently typed expressions.” This feature will be optional in the next iPhone and iPad software update.
This feature could be pretty cool if implemented well, especially if the models could understand the context and give genuinely relevant Genmoji suggestions instead of random ones.
I’m a bit worried how many will take to the feature that automatically creates new emojis using your photos and keyboard history, but luckily, Apple allows users to turn this feature off if they want.
It’s unclear if Genmoji will still rely entirely on device models in iOS 27, but given that there’s no mention of an image model improvement, it still could be.
