Spotify recently changed its app icon for its mobile app, and not everyone appreciates the festive disco ball logo.
The streaming audio service turned 20 and wanted to celebrate with a fun icon
The flat green Spotify app icon was recently replaced with a photorealistic disco ball.
The icon update was a playful change meant to be whimsical and festive Spotify’s 20th Anniversary as a company.
The problem is, not everyone knew that the icon change was meant to be a temporary birthday celebration for Spotify.
That’s why the company has gone out of its way to respond to social media posts and reassure everyone that the disco ball isn’t permanent.
Spotify is telling internet-concerned citizens that its normal app icon will return this week.
Personally, I loved the extra festivity as a temporary holiday. I think the disco ball is just associated with music so people think it’s permanent.
People also take home screen aesthetics very personally. Changing the home screen icon design in a way that doesn’t match other icon styles can be a problem.
However, more apps should use alternate app icon support on iPhone. I’m sure some will enjoy having this icon as an option rather than the default.
In 2020, Instagram did a similar holiday campaign and introduced a variety of app icon options, but it was only temporary.
While Spotify’s disco ball icon may bother some users, I appreciate the energy spent doing something fun for the company’s 20th birthday.
Anyway, the dancing ends this week as the disco ball is called off.
