What you need to know
- Pixel Watch users are reporting a new bug that hides sleep data on the watch, even though Fitbit is still recording it in the background.
- Many affected users continue to see a “No Recent Data” message in the Fitbit app despite having complete sleep statistics.
- The problem reportedly persists for several nights, and basic fixes like restarting the clock don’t seem to fix it reliably.
Another health-tracking nightmare is hitting Google’s Pixel Watch series, and this time it’s sleep data that’s the latest victim. Some Pixel Watch users report that their watch has stopped showing sleep statistics on the device itself, although data is still being recorded in the background.
Complaints began to mount Reddit Late last week, Pixel Watch users kept showing a frustrating “No update. Wear your watch to sleep” message when reporting their device (via Android Authority). Ironically, many of those users can still see their full sleep logs within the Fitbit app on their phone.
Restarting won’t fix it
Users reported that the problem occurred several nights in a row and that simple troubleshooting such as restarting the watch did not always resolve the problem.
The problem arises because the company is in the middle Transforming Fitbit into a broader Google Health platformand some Fitbit features have already been discontinued or changed as part of this transition. While there is no confirmation that these backend changes are causing the problem, the time has left Pixel Watch owners scratching their heads as their health indicators are erratic.
This isn’t the first time Pixel Watch users have encountered health tracking bugs in recent months. Earlier this year, a series of bugs with Fitbit meant that the step counts were incorrect. SpO2 readings are disturbedskin temperature data was missing and syncing was buggy on several generations of Pixel Watches. In one case, users said their watch recorded thousands of steps that could not be taken because they were sitting mostly still. In one, possibly a Fitbit update completely revoked all permissions for health sensors.
For now, those affected can access their sleep logs through the Fitbit app, so the data itself doesn’t appear to have been lost. It seems that the problem is with the presentation or the local acquisition of the data on the watch.
Google has yet to officially say what caused the bug, but Android Central has reached out to the company for comment. For now, until a fix arrives, Pixel Watch owners may have to resort to checking their phones instead of their wrists to see if they’re actually getting a good night’s sleep.
Android Central’s Take
The mistake is indicative of a bigger problem with Google’s wearables strategy right now: the company still markets the Pixel Watch as a serious health partner, but it’s almost always shaky when it comes to basic reliability. Sure, it’s comforting that sleep data is at least stored in the Fitbit app instead of disappearing entirely, but users shouldn’t have to play detective every morning to find last night’s stats.
