You can buy a used CX-5 with an optional turbo for less than a new CX-5 without a turbo.

The new 2026 CX-5 starts at $29,990, which to be fair is a pretty competitive starting price for this segment. Used turbocharged models start at less than that, thanks to heavier depreciation on average in the first few years. When new, the 2023 CX-5 Turbo started at $38,225, while the Signature model asked for $41,025, meaning you’re saving yourself more than $10,000 by going here.

Despite their steep initial starting prices, we think Turbo models are worth around $40,000 new. Despite wearing the base badge, these trim levels were better suited to do battle with luxury marques like BMW or Audi. They are elegant, comfortable and more elegant than you might expect.

Like the non-turbo CX-5s released since 2023, the new 2026 model is equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter engine with 187 horsepower. You will no longer be able to buy a turbocharger. This alone makes the 2023 model a more attractive purchase for enthusiasts. With great fuel, you get some great power figures from the turbo, although if you’re running regular gas, those powers drop off a bit.

Along with a powerful engine, the 2023 CX-5 Turbo is one of the most attractive SUVs on the market, regardless of segment or class. Its fantastically weighted steering is precise and loads up nicely in corners. It also handles great, especially for something as heavy as its weight. Its driving dynamics feel more sporty more lively than what you get from modern BMWs. Its ride is also balanced in such a way that it is also capable of really comfortable cruising.

Mazda traditionally stands out in the market by offering something a little different. Instead of burdening you with screens and tech-based gimmicks, they focused on smooth quality and comfort. We think the 2023 CX-5 is as practical as it gets. Some rivals offer a wider rear bench, but even taller passengers will never feel particularly cramped. The story is the same for the cargo area, which is smaller than the segment average but big enough for most things buyers will carry. In the 2026 model, both the legs of the rear seats and the cargo space have been expanded.

We feel that the new CX-5 has lost a bit of its character. While the updated steering wheel is cool, everything else feels a little too far in the direction of minimalism. The outgoing model had a more interesting interior that felt luxurious and unique. If you opt for the 2023 Turbo model, you’ll also get the best features on offer, including leather upholstery and trim, wood trim, a power liftgate, heated and ventilated front seats, and acoustic glass to keep road noise out of the cabin.

Infotainment and technology

Instead of the giant touchscreen in the center of the dashboard, the 2023 CX-5 Turbo comes standard with a 10.3-inch screen covered in soft-touch leather. This is an emphasis on the scoreboard, not the focus. You also get a hybrid gauge display and head-up display where the center circle is the screen. All this and you also get physical climate control.

There’s no shortage of modern technology here, with standard wireless smartphone mirroring, a wireless charging pad and built-in navigation as standard. You also get a comprehensive suite of driver assistance features, including adaptive cruise control and road sign recognition. Turbo models are also equipped with a very sharp Bose sound system.


Despite the changes, we still prefer the old CX-5

Mazda may not realize it, but when they launched their current lineup, except for the new CX-5, they were way ahead of the competition. From quality to performance, they’ve always felt like more of an entry-level luxury brand, and the 2023 CX-5 Turbo proves it. The new model may have a slightly wider appeal, but it’s lost a lot of what made it special. If we had $30,000 to spend, we’d buy a 2023 Turbo instead of a new model.
