The Adobe Photoshop update brings artificial intelligence processing to the device, but there’s a problem

Adobe released Photoshop version 27.7 today, and one of the most interesting additions is an on-device artificial intelligence model for the Delete tool, which unfortunately comes with pretty strict hardware requirements. Here are the details.

On-device processing is limited to more powerful Macs

Today’s headline release notes Here’s an interesting tidbit about Adobe Photoshop 27.7’s Delete tool:

  • On-device AI model for the delete tool
    • Photoshop now supports on-device AI modeling Delete a tool that allows you to delete an object without cloud processing. Users:
      • After downloading, make edits locally
      • Download, cancel or delete a model at any time
      • Hardware compatibility is automatically checked before downloading
      • Switch between cloud and on-device processing

This means that users can rely on the AI-powered Delete tool even without an active internet connection.

Moreover, for privacy reasons, on-device models are preferred because data never has to leave the device for processing.

Of course, native AI processing is only as good as the hardware it runs on. And here comes the catch.

Here’s the Adobe bad news:

The Delete the tool supports a device model that processes local edits on your device. This option is available when you select it Device mode and requires the following minimum hardware configurations.

Component Minimum hardware requirements
Processor Apple silicon Mac with M1 Pro or later
Memory (RAM) 24 GB or more
Operating system macOS Tahoe (version 26.4) or later

This means that for Macs that fall outside of these minimum requirements, the Device option is grayed out, leaving users with only a cloud-based (but still powerful) version of the AI-powered Erase tool.

Today’s feature updates also include:

  • Photoshop desktop and Firefly Boards integration
    • Share any Photoshop document directly to Firefly Boards by creating a new board or adding to an existing board. Share it panel and Export menu.
    • Firefly boards are now exposed Variations as a destination for panel moodboarding and comparison of AI-generated variations.
    • Open the generated image variations with Idea on Firefly Boards in a pre-configured Board layout for further exploration and replication.
    • New managed workflows help create mood boards and visual concepts, branding and marketing assets and social media content.
  • Excellent generative AI features
    • Broad access to premium generative AI features for eligible subscribers. Existing generative credits can now be used on both standard and premium generative AI features.
  • Single Account Menu in the edit workspace
    • View and manage your Adobe account, subscription details and generative credits directly from the Editing workspace through the new Single Account Menu.
