When people think late Satoshi Konusually the first thing that comes to mind is the films of the legendary anime director: Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprikaand trippy Agent of Paranoia TV show. But it’s what doesn’t get enough love Dream fossil and Opus, Before becoming famous, Kon worked as a manga creator. The manga, I’d argue, would make the perfect bookend for people like me who rewatch its movies every year to appreciate the full extent of its unique ability to blur the lines between fantasy and reality.
As I heard Opus I met before Dream fossil by accident while browsing my local bookstore. In the same way, Tatsuki Fujimoto 17-26 it caught my interest as a collection of short stories before hitting the big time Fire Punch and The Man in Chains, The Dream Fossil: The Complete Stories of Satoshi Ko was the fastest purchase my life Why? Yes, it’s a collection of fifteen short stories he wrote before he started directing. As a fan of Con, the critically acclaimed filmmakers adored Christopher Nolan and Darren Aronofsky respected (and fell accordingly), I was interested to see the types of works the author weaved before stunning the world with anime. Not surprisingly, I came away from the book with a newfound appreciation for Cohn, with hints of ideas to revisit in the larger arc of his work, while also learning a few cool facts about him that I hadn’t connected the dots to before.

If I were to define the overall mood of the 15 short stories Dream fossilI’d say they’re a less depressing doppelgänger Agent of Paranoia. Of course, there are speculative fiction thrillers out there to showcase his ability to dream up creative stories. Among them is the main Carve outA tale of two twins gifted with ESP trying to survive in the world of FUBAR; GuestsA humorous tale about a family trying their best to ignore the fact that their fancy village house is haunted by ghosts; and Torikoits two part Akira– A dystopian story of a rebellious boy on the run from a robot cop in a desperate attempt to avoid being thrown into rehab for the crime of buying cigarettes from his parents’ office and drinking.
Picnicshort story in full color Dream fossildeclares all of the editor’s notes as a fairy tale brother AkiraHe came up with the casual note that he was Con’s former assistant Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomoa fact that makes a lot of sense when you think about their remarkably similar art styles and themes in their works. We love goat helper-mentor pipeline in the manga.
But my favorite short stories Dream fossil slices of life were those full of whimsy. such tales Summer of Anxietyhere begins a cute romance where a biker meets a woman while being chased by his ex-boyfriend. Or Merry Bella story about a mall Santa who spends his night helping a little girl go home while pestering her to buy a horse for Christmas. But of all Kohn’s short stories, this was my favorite beyond the sun suspicious Looney Tunes-seems like an adventure about a nurse who chases an elderly patient after his hospital bed is unlocked and it becomes a problem for the whole town. Each of these stories had a magical ability to evoke a sense of visceral nostalgia, like the warmth of the summer sun on my skin as I walked under the trees to the school bus in elementary school. And he managed to do it for a period of time that I was not alive. Mind you, this was Con before the world knew what it was about.
while Dream fossil Kon touches on the hidden potential he had at the start of his career, Opus He lands painfully – if that made me go, “Oh my god, it’s going to end like this?!” loudly in my senior year.

When people think of the great thing about Cohn’s career, they often think of it Dream carThe fifth film he offered before his death in 2010 at the age of 46. But the pang of agony I felt after reading it. Opus It was leagues beyond my daily misery Ai Yazawa’s Indefinite Breaks Nana and Takehiko Inoue tramp.
Opusis, in my humble opinion, the most ambitious, experimental story Cone has ever concocted. How-Pafricanwere manga levels of ambition. Plus, despite the fact that its metanarrative premise is pretty common, I’ve never experienced a story quite like Kon’s. Opus Chikara Nagai follows the famous mangaka as he prepares to pen his final page Resonancehis favorite sci-fi manga. The only problem is that the last page of the manga is stolen by the character he shockingly plans to kill on that page, causing Nagai to pursue his own series.
Since this is Satoshi Kon we’re talking about, what follows in the manga’s thrilling adventure isn’t as clear-cut as Nagai and Nagai’s manga heroine Satoko teaming up to save the day by taking the last page from her villainous sidekick. Things are much more complicated than that. For starters, the fact that Nagai wastes no time explaining that he created Satoko and the world she lives in, including all the trauma she’s been through, for entertainment value (and to please her editor) makes her existentially conflicted about helping her. The manga focuses on how messed up the whole arrangement is through creative panels that take full advantage of using the environment as a canvas to tell their own meta story.
A highlight of the breathtaking panel work are the moments where hyper-detailed background art is replaced by crowd shots and characters distort reality, walk through a maze of memories, filter through graphic novel volumes like tearing portals off the page, and blend into a flood of overlapping panels.

But my big “oh shit” moment Opus is that the manga never came to a conclusion. You see, the series was put on hold so Kon could take a break Perfect Blue. This break ended up being permanent and Opus was never completed. To make matters worse, it rolls into the abyss. As I speak CrazyI’ve been flying ever since Kentaro Miura passed away. Thankfully, the shock I felt in real time was half a step towards a happy ending. Opus. In the greatest post-mortem metanarrative post I’ve ever seen, the folks at Dark Horse managed to get an extra story. The rough chapter that Cone is working on Opus but was never officially released and add it to the end of the manga.

While I won’t reveal what happens in the extra chapter, I will say that it goes further than just how overlapping the meta is. Opus it was already It filled me with grunts and misty eyes. But more importantly, it cemented Cohn’s legacy as an absolute master of his craft.
