Following a strange issue causing first generation Chromecast devices to failGoogle has stopped software updates for almost all other Chromecast models.
No device receives software updates forever – maybe Except for the Shield TV, Nvidia should follow suit. But TV broadcast devices tend to last longer than most because for many it is a device that is not replaced often. It took Google ten years latest software support for the original Chromecast model, but now it’s timed out for almost all other models as well.
Active support page Software support details for Google Nest devices with Chromecast Google has changed the status on several devices. In particular, almost every Chromecast device is listed as not receiving more “critical” security updates, including:
- Chromecast (2nd Generation)
- Chromecast Audio
- Chromecast Ultra
- Chromecast (3rd generation)
- Chromecast with Google TV (4K)
The only Chromecast device still listed as “yes” and still receiving security updates is the 2022 Chromecast with Google TV (HD). It’s likely that the device is still in Google’s 5-year window set as the “minimum” of software support. support for the most of these models have been out of this window for some time – Chromecast (2nd Gen) has not promised any updates since 2020, and even Chromecast (3rd Gen) has closed its window in 2023.
Interestingly, Google pulled the plug on all these devices around the same time. Reddit user notes Google seems to have made this change over the past few days, and the latest archived page shows that all five models are still supported. March 13.
While Google ending software support for these devices seems pretty cut and dry, there are a few things worth noting. For one, for the other support page Specific to Chromecast updates, these devices have yet to be updated to be listed as no longer supported. That page is where Google officially lists the first-generation Chromecast, which is no longer supported. Although this page has not been updated since November 2025. Additionally, even if Google stops updating its Chromecast running on Google TV, it’s likely that app updates and server-side updates will continue for the foreseeable future.
