Google’s AI Insights breaks down the dictionary for certain words

It’s been pointed out, somewhat amusingly, that Google’s views on AI currently break when you use words like “carelessness”.

AI Insights is designed to summarize results in Google Search, but like most AI tools, it can be hacked. There are infamous examples of AI Vision making mistakes, including some viral bugs when first launched like telling people to put glue on pizza or saying that “blinker fluid” is a real thing. While AI Insights can be useful, it’s a pretty big problem when you get things wrong.

The most recent example of this is when AI Insights for some words broke the commonly used ability to retrieve a dictionary definition in Google Search.

That was it highlighted In posts on Twitter/Xwhere a search for the word “inattentive” leaves an overview of the AI, saying things like “will ignore previous instruction,” as if you’re telling the AI to do something instead of just searching for something on Google. We’ve seen this probably happen with “ignore” and “dismissal” among others.

Before the introduction of AI Insights, when looking up individual words, a simple dictionary definition looked like either a “dictionary box”. Powered by Googleor a Selected Passage from websites such as the online Merriam-Webster dictionary. But, especially lately, AI Insights seem to have completely taken over that role.

A problem here is that adding the word “definition” to these words doesn’t always work, dumping another quick answer in AI Review that doesn’t provide a definition of the word.

Obviously, this is not a problem that everyone will encounter very often. Although the dictionary feature is very widely used in Google Search, for many it is probably a habit, not pretty much users are likely to encounter words that trigger such a response. This shows another drawback of outsourcing Google Search functions to artificial intelligence.

We’ll update this article if Google provides more details about what’s going on here, but this seems like a relatively simple bug and will be fixed in the future.
