If May proved anything, it’s that gadgets are getting more premium and expensive by the day. Like mainstream gaming consoles, for example Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam Deck OLED This month it suffered due to the large part of the price increases the ongoing RAM price apocalypse. We’ll probably see laptops, telephonesand other technologies will become more expensive in the coming months.
Apart from price news, Google’s big I/O developer conference came and went, wall to wall Gemini stuffed into everything. When Google was so busy finding ways, there was little room for gadgets Reinvent Search, although the company offered more tantalizing details about it upcoming Android XR smart glasses— sorry, I meant “smart glasses” — also AR glasses.
Looking at May, there was a lot of expensive equipment. At the very least, many of them were really strong contenders in all their categories.

Bose’s new Wi-Fi speakers are so good they should make Sonos sweat bullets. The company’s new Lifestyle Ultra Speaker delivers flawless sound quality when connected to your Wi-Fi network. They’re wired speakers, which means you’ll need to keep them at home, but we found them to have room-filling sound quality good enough that you’d even want two people to create a stereo pair for head-banging surround audio.

The company that brought us reMarkable Paper Pro and Paper Pro Move E Ink continues to score victories in tablets. The Paper Pure is reMarkable’s black-and-white entry-level tablet, although despite its plastic design, the screen is a real treat. Paper Pure has a faster refresh rate than the company’s color E Ink tablets. It’s a little bundle of note-taking joy that could be the best e-reader or E Ink note-taking device for students who can’t afford more textbooks.

For laptops that can replace your gaming desktop, none feels more responsive or better than Alienware’s updated 16-inch Area-51. Unlike 2025 modelthis new version features an OLED display as well as an anti-glare filter for readability even in daylight. It has one of the best gaming laptop keyboards we’ve ever used on a laptop, not to put too fine a point on it. With top-of-the-line features and new Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus CPU, it is also one of the best performing laptops today. It’s so big and so expensive that you shouldn’t leave the house with it, but we still enjoyed it sitting at our desk.

Do you really need a screen on your wireless headphone case? Maybe not, but the Anker Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro Max still has enough features to make it worth it. Anker’s So chip built into these buds provides some of the best active noise cancellation we’ve ever heard in a pair of wireless headphones. You can practically tune out an entire clanging subway car with just these two buds sitting comfortably in your ears. Otherwise, the case has unique audio recording and AI transcription capabilities, which as journalists we found particularly appealing.

If you’ve ever wanted to try esports-ready analog switches without needing to buy an entire magnetic keyboard, the Logitech G512 X is the equivalent of a “pro” keyboard tasting menu. It seems like every TV manufacturer is sporting their own mix RGB TV. Only Sony has stuck with the technology enough to ditch all the old QLEDs in favor of “True RGB” screens like the Bravia 9 II. The TV is certainly a looker, with a maximum brightness of 4000 nits (the same as Sony’s professional cinema monitors) and an additional black filter to increase contrast. We found the TV’s live settings to be perhaps too vivid – some scenes look unreal – and it also promises the most accurate color and picture quality for a cinema.

What could be better than a screen? Two screens, that’s it. That statement won’t make sense until you test the device as the Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo, a hinged dual-screen gaming laptop. The magnetic keyboard attaches to the bottom of the 16-inch OLED display, allowing it to be used like any other laptop. However, when both screens are detected, you can run a game on one screen and open your browser or Discord chats on the other. The only downside to this setup is that it starts at an astronomical $4,500, and this version doesn’t even come with the top-of-the-line Nvidia RTX 5090 GPU.

The ongoing collaboration between Google and Xreal is shaping up to be one of the more interesting XR glasses we’ve seen from any major brand. It has the same capabilities as headphones like Project Aura Samsung Galaxy XRincluding limited hand tracking and access to core Android apps. Unlike AR headsets, the Xreal glasses are lightweight and lightweight enough that you can wear them while flying and won’t get weird looks from your colleagues. Of course, you’ve already waived the $550 price tag of a pair AirPods Max 2. Then comes Sony, which looks at the price of Apple’s high-end wireless headphones and whispers, “Hold my beer.” Sony’s 1000X The Collection features a new vegan leather wrap on both the earcups and headband, new audio drivers, and a $650 price tag. Despite all that, we have to admit that they sound pretty good. They feature Sony’s DSEE Ultimate audio enhancement technology, which provides better mixing of the sound you’d normally lose when listening via Bluetooth.
