Research firm MoffetNathanson has developed a new quality index for streaming services, and Apple TV has overtaken Netflix in the first ranking.
Apple TV lags behind Disney and HBO Max, but tops all other broadcasters in the new quality index
Engagement is the metric many streaming services use to measure their success. This focus on “time spent” helps explain why Netflix’s creator he once said service competes against sleep.
But since not all badge types are created equal, researchers at MoffettNathanson developed a new “Quality” measurement tool to evaluate broadcasters’ performance.

- viewing time of day (“primetime is a better indicator intentionality and attention more than midnight”)
- content demand for data services
- franchise depth
- prestige (awards, critical acclaim)
- sports/live events

As you can see from the bar chart, Disney is far behind all its competitors in the quality index. HBO Max and Apple TV are tied for second place, with HBO Max almost outpacing Apple.
Netflix is not far behind Apple TV, followed by Amazon, Peacock and Paramount+ rounding out the list.

Because the industry places so much value on engagement, Apple often ranks at the bottom when comparing different streaming services. This new “Quality” indicator shows that a broadcaster is succeeding in a key area that is very important to viewers.
Apple always emphasizes that it wants to create the best content, not the most. While increasing engagement is certainly an intrinsic goal, I hope it’s always done with the goal of keeping quality strong.
