The Call of Duty franchise has had to walk a fine line in recent years, with the player base constantly pulling development teams in conflicting directions. The divider is an annual map rotation between themes.
The question of whether or not Call of Duty should launch with remastered maps from previous years or the number of maps available regularly dominates the conversation surrounding the new release.
Whereas last year Black operation 7 Launching with a solid map rotation featuring some remasters of nostalgic offerings from the past, this year’s Call of Duty title from Infinity Ward ditched the remastered maps in its launch strategy and instead came out of the gate with all-new, never-before-seen maps.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 — Multiplayer maps confirmed
Here are the maps confirmed to be coming to Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer at launch:
- Silkworm
- Reactor J92
- Roof covering
- mumbai
- Lithium
- Ammunition
- Boxes
- Seafaring
- Lotus
- Watchman
- Coal
- Transit 23
- Korean Nuclear Reactor (KNR)
- Kill the block
one Interview before the launch of Modern Warfare 4Infinity Ward’s multiplayer team has confirmed that many of the maps coming at launch will be based on locations and events from the campaign. Specifically, the maps are treated as “2 blocks down” from the campaign events, with a separate fire team fighting alongside the campaign events.
It was the first to be realized under this concept Silkwormwhich — together with the upcoming map of the coastal city of Korea, Lotus — enabled the team to create rural and urban assets of South Korean cities that could be used logistically throughout the campaign, multiplayer, and DMZ.
During the pre-briefing with press, studio and multiplayer executives, they spoke candidly about the map design process and the importance of making sure each map stands out with its own personality and flair.
The team emphasized the importance of clearer sight lines, reduced visual clutter, and more targeted targeting to ensure players capture human opponents rather than fighting the environment.
However, a map throws a wrench into the game. Kill Block is specially designed as a dynamic map that changes with each round of the match. Studio Multiplayer Creative Director Geoff Smith was inspired to design Kill Block based on the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid. This unique stadium features a retractable pitch that allows you to convert its playing area to meet the needs of different events through a complex underground system.
To create Kill Block, the team reimagined the battlefield as three separate tiles. The center tile is called the hero tile and serves as an anchor, but the scheme of Kill Block updates is alive in round-based matches. This random rotation ensures that no two matches feel the same.
Smith confirmed devlog that the team has enough assets to potentially create over 900 tile combinations for Kill Block. However, at launch the team is aiming for 500 live combos – with more to come after launch, including possible throwbacks to familiar locations from past Modern Warfare games.
Kill Block’s footprint is identical to that of former fan favorite Shoot House. Based on our experience playing it during the preview, the map scratched the itch for those of us looking for fast-paced, risky engagements and some good, old-fashioned small-map mayhem. Kill Block will support all major multiplayer modes at launch.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 — Multiplayer modes confirmed
Some game modes are simply meant to be in a Call of Duty title, but there’s always the potential for a new mode to be a beloved addition to the rotation. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has been confirmed to launch with the following modes:
- Team deathmatch
- dominance
- Hard point
- Kill Confirmed
- Counter Attack
- Inflation
- Abduct
- Gunfight 10v10
- Party modes
- The Great War
- Battle stations
- Frontal attack
Team Deathmatch, a perennial staple of Call of Duty’s multiplayer playlist, is expected to return, but the team at Infinity Ward has taken some creative liberties with TDM spinoff mode Inflation. Inflation will challenge teams of six players to take each other out, but with added risk and reward.
Removing a player costs money and can be taken to add to the team’s score. Players who carry a large amount of cash on them become a high-value target for an additional challenge. The team with the most money at the end of the match runs away with the victory.
The popular Gunfight mode also got some tweaks for Modern Warfare 4. Each match will be on a round robin basis and each player will be assigned a random loadout. But the randomization doesn’t stop there. Gunfight 10v10 will pit two teams of ten players each against each other on the new Kill Block map, randomized each round. It’s as exciting as it sounds, but a word of caution for runners and bowlers: tread lightly or spend the entire match watching your teammates!
Following the first reveal of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Infinity Ward has surprised us with more details about what players can expect during the game’s launch window.
