Steam on Android handhelds just got better with this updated Linux distro

Several Linux-based distributions are available Android handheld devicesallows you to run a completely different operating system on your device. Rocknix it is one of the most popular options in this regard, and the preview builds allow you to run the official version of Steam. Now, if you want to play Steam games on your handheld, the platform has received a major update.

The 20260601 Rocknix update is now available on GitHub and has an extensive changelog. This is not surprising as it is the first stable release since May 2025. This update brings the Arm-based Steam client to stable users after arriving on nightly builds for the first time. However, if you’re using the Valve client on older nightly builds, there are numerous fixes related to Steam. First, the team reports that Rocknix’s fake suspend feature, which acts as a sleep mode on some devices, should now work faster with Steam.

Other notable Steam-related changes include the uninstall script (useful given that this is an immutable OS) and a fix for the non-working “switch to desktop” option.

I can confirm that Steam’s “switch to desktop” option does indeed work on recent nightly builds, as tapping this option previously caused my AYN Odin 2 Portal to remain on older Rocknix builds. I’m also happy to report that the fake pause option works fine when you’re on Steam. The latter issue was one of my main complaints with Rocknix and when I tried it Steam on Android handheld device last month, because entering or exiting this pseudo-sleep mode was a slow and unreliable experience.

Steam also opens faster than previous nightly builds. My first experience with Steam on Rocknix saw the client take about two minutes to launch. However, the app takes about 20 seconds to open on recent builds. I’m running Rocknix via a microSD card, which causes a performance penalty, so I’m sure you’ll see better performance if Rocknix is ​​installed on your internal storage.

This stable update also brings many other additions, including the Heroic Games Launcher and Ares emulator, support for Retroid’s dual-screen addon, updates for various emulators, and many device-specific fixes.

It’s worth noting that Rocknix regularly offers nightly builds, so users don’t have to wait more than a year for a new update. But this latest stable release is still a big deal, as there should be less bugs and more polish.
