New social features further Plex’s evolution from the media server business

Plex is adding new social features to the platform.

Starting today, users can create and share “customized playlists of any movie, show or episode on Plex,” the company said in an announcement. Later this year, users will be able to import playlists from other streaming services and react to other people’s playlists.

This month, Plex will launch a community forum that lets people “write and comment directly on any movie, show, season or episode.” Later this year, Plex will introduce “Fitness Scores” based on a viewer’s history and past ratings to predict how much viewers will like a show or movie, Plex said.

Plex already lets people rate content, and this year it will let them react with emoji. Similarly, Plex will allow people to reply to comments and discussions with images. According to Plex’s announcement, the goal is to bring “a new layer of expression to every conversation.”

Finally, the Watch Everything feature, coming this year, will provide users with alerts about movies, shows, actors and crew members they’re watching.

Plex’s announcement opened up new possibilities for how people use Plex today, claiming that its users already “make over 100 million viewing decisions per month and create over 45 million playlists.”

“The addition of these features is the next step in Plex’s vision to unify entertainment discovery and help users navigate the increasingly fragmented streaming landscape,” Plex’s announcement said.
