Claims for Google’s $68 million Assistant solution are now public

Google Assistant users are finally being notified of a $68 million privacy settlement, and if you think you might qualify, it might be worth taking a look at your email spam folder.

The problem is that emails get filtered into spam folders, making them easy to miss.

The Google Assistant settlement stems from a class-action lawsuit Google agreed to settle in January 2026. The plaintiffs alleged that Google Assistant sometimes accidentally activates after detecting wake words like “OK, Google” and recording conversations it should never have heard. They further claimed that the data collected during these unintended activations was used for advertising purposes.

The plaintiffs argued that Assistant overstepped the company’s line when it eavesdropped on conversations that were never intended for Google’s ears in the first place.

As part of the settlement agreement, Google agreed to pay $68 million to settle the case, though it denied any wrongdoing.

Claims are now open and eligible users are requested to fill a claim form with sufficient detail to receive compensation. If you’ve used Google Assistant during the time period covered by the claim and think you might qualify, it’s a good idea to look for billing-related messages in your inbox and check your spam folder if nothing appears.

The settlement site notes that the “Buyer Settlement Class” includes users who purchased a Google-manufactured device in the US or its territories between May 18, 2016 and March 19, 2026.

At the same time, the “Privacy Calculation Class” includes Google Assistant users or members of the user’s household whose communications were recorded by Google Assistant due to incorrect activation between May 18, 2016 and March 19, 2026. This class also includes users whose communications were disclosed during the third-party review during that period.

The billing form must be completed by August 27, 2026 to receive payment.

As always, users should verify that any email they receive is directed to a legitimate billing site before submitting their personal information.
