Five leading scientists they were kicked out from annual meeting of American Diabetes Association (ADA) Friday at New Orleans. Their crime: distributing copies of the editorial, has been published On April 29, Diabetes Care magazine sharply criticized the Trump administration’s continued attacks on scientific research.
Those ousted were Stephen Kahn, a University of Washington medicine professor and editor-in-chief of Diabetes Care, who co-authored the published editorial; Desmond Schatz, former ADA president, University of Florida, Gainesville; Aaron Kelly, pediatrics processor at the University of Minnesota; Justin Ryder of Northwestern University; and Irl Hirsch of the University of Washington. Five people were handing out reprints of an editorial outside the room where NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya was scheduled to speak. Bhattacharya canceled and another NIH official spoke in his place.
“They physically grabbed us, forced us out of the conference center, and now they’re telling us we can’t attend this meeting anymore,” Kelly said. This was reported by MedPage Todaywho first reported the incident. “They’re taking our lanyards. That’s what really happened in America. Censorship is real. America needs to stand up. Scientists, stand up. Doctors, stand up.”
The ADA confirmed to MedPage Today that five registered scientists were expelled from the meeting, claiming they violated the organization’s code of conduct for conferences. The ADA media team said in a statement: “These participants were escorted by our event security staff due to their behavior that was inconsistent with this code of conduct.” “They were respectfully given the opportunity to stop this behavior and were therefore not escorted.”
“All participants will conduct themselves in a professional and respectful manner without any form of discrimination, harassment or intimidation,” the code of conduct states. “Inappropriate behavior, including, but not limited to, threatening or unwanted physical or verbal actions; or disruptive or disruptive behavior, such as objections, will not be tolerated.”
