We don’t know yet whether Apple will call it iPhone Fold, iPhone Ultra or something else, but everyone expects the company to announce its first foldable phone later this year. via Sonny Dicksonthese dummy unit photos give our closest look at what we can expect from the design.
The foldable iPhone will have an approximately 7.8-inch screen when unfolded, giving it an effective internal screen area similar to the iPad mini. As shown in these mockup models, the front camera will be placed in the upper left corner of this screen.
At the same time, the size of the external screen is about 5.5 inches. When closed, the Fold’s aspect ratio is slightly shorter than modern iPhones and almost resembles a passport-style form factor.
The internal camera is combined with two external rear cameras. The device will not have Face ID biometrics, instead it will offer Touch ID fingerprint recognition via the side button to unlock the device and use Apple Pay.
Interestingly, Dickson believes that Apple will not be able to offer multiple colors of the Fold. While Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously reported that Apple would launch a black-and-white foldable iPhone, Dixon suggests that white might be the only option.
It’s true for new products that Apple tends to launch with a more limited set of color options and gradually add more over time. For example, the original iPhone and iPad did not have a color option. Customers had to wait until the second-generation models, the iPhone 3G and the iPad 2, to have a choice of black or white.
In 2017, the updated iPhone X generation was introduced with only two color options; silver or space gray. And the redesigned chassis of the iPhone 17 Pro is offered in just three colors compared to last year’s four colors.
In general, the rumor mill expects the main differentiator for Apple’s foldable device to be build quality, especially the hinge, and many reports suggest that the fold of the foldable iPhone will be almost invisible.
Additionally, we expect that Apple will be able to leverage the vibrant iPad tablet app ecosystem to bring powerful software to the iPhone Fold from launch. iOS 27, which will be officially unveiled tomorrow, may give us some hints about Apple’s plans for the foldable software experience.
