A new report from Financial Times OpenAI says it plans to make ChatGPT a “super app” with a major overhaul in the coming weeks. This redesign will focus on OpenAI”Codex” coding tool, as well as agent AI tools that can perform tasks for users.

The main driver of these planned changes is revenue. Although ChatGPT has amassed more than a billion users since its launch in 2022, most people use it for free.
That might be good for users, but not great for revenue, and with OpenAI looking to IPO soon, investors will want to know how the company plans to make more money.
The company now sees ChatGPT as less of a chatbot and more of a gateway to introduce its users to higher-value tools that can generate revenue.
“Chat is dead,” said one senior employee. This may sound like hyperbole, especially coming from a company that is bringing AI chatbots into the spotlight. However, the report also details how OpenAI’s view of ChatGPT has changed over time.
OpenAI core product and platform lead Thibault Sottiaux explained the changes FT:
It will exceed the actual surface. . . What we have built is where you have your own personal agent who can help you. . . In everything in your life, be it personal or at work.
Meanwhile, the company also wants to increase its income from the business. Business users already account for 40% of OpenAI’s revenue, and the company expects that to grow to 50% by the end of this year.
These changes will begin to be reflected in the ChatGPT web and mobile apps in the coming weeks, and they will reportedly direct users to OpenAI’s coding tools, image generation, and third-party apps.
In the long term, OpenAI expects that ChatGPT will automatically understand user intent without the need for prompts and functions that direct users to different tools and services.
