Babbel or Duolingo? This is our readers’ favorite language learning app

If there’s one thing that’s consistently on my list of New Year’s resolutions, it’s learning another language. As is tradition, this decision is broken every year, but not for lack of trying.

In Rita’s article, we asked her favorite language learning app on Android, and after 9,487 votes, there’s a clear winner.

We offered readers four clear possible application options and a fifth option for those with a more complex view. Not surprisingly, the big shots are near the top of the standings.

The most popular language learning app among our readers is Duolingo with just under 42% votes. My colleagues have a love-hate relationship with the green owl, but many have long streaks of over 1,000 days. He’s clearly doing something right, and this result backs it up.

In second place comes Babbel, the subject of Rita’s work. It should be noted that few commenters use Babbel as a language learning app, although it accounts for more than a quarter (28.7%) of support.

The next most popular option is one that many people forget even exists: Google Translate’s new language learning feature. It got less than 10% votes and I expect that number to increase as users become more aware of the product.

Two minnows at Memrise (7.5%) and Drops (3.1%) received support from another tenth of the readership, while 9.4% chimed in with their voices in the comments.

Alternatives here include Glango, Preply, LingoDeer, Pimsleur, and Dreaming Languages, all of which are mentioned a couple of times.
