Gemini suddenly can’t make calls on Android and Android Auto

The switch to Gemini in Android Auto has been a bit difficult for a number of reasons, but an existing bug will leave some users unable to call for a strange error, and it’s not just a problem behind the wheel.

Approved by several Android Auto users individually Reddit threads This week, Gemini can’t make calls with voice commands in the car. It also seems to affect Gemini’s ability to make calls on Android.

An error message saying “Something went wrong. Please try again” appears on the phone as shown below.

Given that this isn’t just an issue with Android Auto, it’s hard to say what the real cause of the problem is, but it’s likely rooted in Gemini or a Google app update.

A few affected users say that switching back to Google Assistant will fix the problem, but it’s definitely a short-term fix.

We’ll update this post as more details become available.

Note that this is because in recent days we’ve noticed that Android Auto occasionally re-displays the Assistant icon instead of Gemini, despite using Gemini for the response. It’s random and hard to repeat, but we’ve seen it a few times in the last few days. If you see this visual bug, let us know in the comments below.
