I thought VLC was unbeatable until I tried this open source media player


I’ve installed VLC on every computer I’ve owned for twenty years, and I still recommend it as the default for playing media on my entire family. It’s incredibly simple, self-explanatory, and offers some level of customization if you need to go deeper. So when I say I stopped using it on my desktop, I don’t mean it VLC it got worse, but i found an alternative based on it still in mpv FFmpegit asks a little more of you, but gives you a ton of control in return.

When you play a 1080p file on a 4K screen, something has to upscale that image to fill the panel, and the quality of those approximations affects how the video looks more than anything else. This extension is called scaling, and VLC basically makes this decision for you. mpv gives you a choice and you can tell it what scaling algorithm to use and you can upgrade to high quality options that retain detail and edges better than standard stretching.

This goes further than choosing a scaler. mpv can run custom GLSL shaders, small programs that process the image on the GPU when it plays, so people get neural network-like enhancements like Anime4K running on regular video. There is nothing in VLC that compares to the user. mpv also has a built-in debanding filter that smooths out the blocky color gradients you see in skies and dark scenes, and this is one change you won’t see once it’s enabled.

The color side has also been improved recently: as of mpv 0.41, released in late 2025, the libplacebo-based “gpu-next” renderer is standard, sharpening HDR tone mapping and out-of-the-box color management. VLC handles HDR, but the difference is consistency and control. mpv exposes the tone mapping pipeline rather than deciding everything for you, and in my experience it’s more reliable to get from HDR to SDR.

Every default mpv exists and every key on your keyboard can be edited via two simple text files: mpv.conf for behavior and input.conf for keyboard bindings. Install them once and your entire player travels with you to any other machine or operating system, copying a single folder.

The real story, though, is the script. mpv exposes an API that the entire ecosystem of community scripts connects to. uosc gives you a clean, modern on-screen control panel that appears when your cursor hovers over it. thumb It creates the search bar preview thumbnails you might miss on YouTube and feeds them to a UI script like uosc rather than drawing them itself. style contains scripts to skip sponsored segments SponsorBlockand a small autoload script that queues up the next file in a folder, so a season of episodes just goes by.

To be fair, VLC isn’t a closed box either. There are and always have been Lua extensions, but the difference is design and degree. In VLC, extensions sit as add-ons next to the player, while in mpv, the playback behavior, interface, and automation all live in the same configuration and script layer that you’re already editing.

Open vanilla mpv for the first time and you get a bare window with video in it. No menu bar, no preferences dialog, no settings wheel, not even an open button to open a second file. For someone coming from the familiar layout of VLC, mpv will be uncomfortable by default, and that’s kind of the point. mpv’s features live mostly in documentation and configuration files, not in menus you can browse through, so discovering what it can do involves a willingness to read and learn keyboard shortcuts.

The good news is that the “no interface” problem is mostly about which front door you use. mpv has robust graphics front-ends built into its engine, so you can save rendering and lose the bare window. On Linux, Celluloid is a natural fit, a GTK app that feels right at home on the GNOME desktop and reads mpv’s own configuration files. IINA on macOS is a truly polished, native player built on top of mpv. On Windows, mpv.net wraps the engine in a modern GUI with a right-click menu. And SMPlayer, which can run mpv as a backend, covers all three platforms with a more traditional, buttons-everywhere interface. Even if you stay with vanilla mpv, just installing uosc gets you a clean control panel and gets you out of the keyboard only experience.
