Apple’s long list of concessions in the European Union continues as the company confirmed that users can install apps through third-party app stores. iPad starting tomorrow, September 16.
It is the same day iPadOS 18 releases, meaning it’s a big day for users of Apple’s tablet lineup.
It was announced through a post Apple’s developer sitestarting September 16, “users in the EU can download iPadOS apps on the App Store and through alternative distributions.”

“As noted in May, if you have opted into the Alternative Terms Addendum for Apps in the EU, the first annual installs of iPadOS will begin to accrue and the lower App Store commission rate will apply.”
“Apple also says alternative browser engines can be used in iPadOS apps,” as it abandons at least some of its perceptions since the arrival of the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
iPad users can get Fortnite and more in the EU
In many ways, this is a logical next step since the same principles have already been applied to the iOS platform, but it’s still notable because it will allow iOS, iPadOS, and (as always) macOS to now sideload — at least in Europe.
Apple was given six months to make iPadOS DMA-compliant, and the company confirmed its commitment in May of this year.
Epic Games’ storefront is available for EU users ie They can install Fortnite on iOSbut the developer also expressed interest in bringing it back to the iPad.
