You get five Matter-over-Thread contact sensors and a smart plug. Instead of a seamless utopia, you spend your weekend struggling with Bluetooth enable errors. The sensor goes offline because Apple HomePod and Nest Hub Mini refuse to share security credentials. After six months, your coin batteries are completely dead.

Credentials and network state must be coordinated for thread border routers to participate in the same architecture, and this coordination is not always seamless across ecosystems.
The reality is that for many Matter-compatible devices, it feels like manufacturers have built invisible fences, creating disguised corporate walled gardens. Use Home Assistant as a local bridge to introduce selected devices to Apple, Google or Alexa while keeping the core automation logic local. The item is not completely useless. It’s just a terrible foundation for low-power sensors, so it might be time to isolate the wall sockets.
