If you’ve recently upgraded your Pixel Android 17 and your screen is behaving erratically, you are not the only one experiencing this problem. A frustrating new bug for early adopters disrupts a key part of the smartphone experience: its touchscreen.

Confusion is the result of greatness, Android 17 stable release. While major OS upgrades are usually accompanied by a few niggling issues, reports are already showing a frustrating 5G glitch and a work profile bug that causes home screen widgets to disappear entirely – a broken touchscreen is a fish from a different river entirely. You can get past Wi-Fi dropouts with cellular data, but you can’t get past a screen that doesn’t recognize your thumb.
The entire modern Pixel lineup is affected
The issue has already been reported on Google’s IssueTracker and, based on several Reddit threads, affects the entire modern lineup. Users say the Pixel 10, 9, 8 and 7 series are all affected. Error also does not discriminate by program; these reversed inputs and dead zones occur anywhere in the system UI.
Google is aware of the problem. However, several users responded that this fix did nothing to restore normal touch responses.
If Google’s method doesn’t work, some users have had success by going into their device settings and turning off the “Smooth Display” feature. Interestingly, at least one owner found that turning Smooth Display off and back on fixed the erratic scrolling for good. Note that this fix has a varying success rate, but if you’re currently struggling with reverse scrolling directions while reading email, it’s definitely worth a try.
Google has not currently committed to a firm timeline for a permanent software patch. If you’re still using last year’s firmware and haven’t downloaded Android 17 yet, hold down that install button. Wait for the first official bug fix update to come out.

Honestly, after months of watching the development of Android 17, it’s exhausting to see this “stable” release turn premium hardware into a frustrating game of touch-roulette. I guess one “benefit” of this mess is that Google has kindly forced us into a weird digital detox. After all, it’s so easy to put down your phone when every swipe up brings you violently back to the top of your feed.
