What makes a classic movie? have different definitions classic movie. You can have classics from the 1930s and 1940s that paved the way for future filmmakers. There are cult classics that have aged well despite receiving mixed reactions upon release. You can own modern classics that have continued to age gracefully for the past 30 years.
There are countless classic movies I haven’t seen yet, ie. Gone with the wind. Trying to cross some classics off my list. After watching most of these movies, I kick myself because I wish I had seen them sooner. For two of these movies on the list, I watched them as it was this year and I can’t wait to watch them again in the future.
The Godfather Part II
Delivers one of the defining performances of a generation
One of the silver linings of being forced to stay indoors during the COVID-19 pandemic was the ability to cross some classics off my list. i saw Godfather before, but never sat down and watched it The Godfather Part II from start to finish. Shame on me for taking so long to post what I believe to be Francis Ford Coppola’s best film in the trilogy.
The the sequel follows two timelines. The first follows Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro), a young Sicilian immigrant who escapes death in Italy and becomes a high-level criminal in New York. Another timeline is set in 1958 and follows Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), the new Don of the Corleone family, who must sniff out a traitor in his inner circle. Acting is subjective, but Pacino’s tragic-anti-hero-turned-villain should be on any top 10 list of all-time cinematic performances.
LA confidential
Murder and corruption within the LAPD
It was 1997 TitanicThe awards season ended with a dominant 11 records The Oscars. One of four films to lose Best Picture Titanic was LA ConfidentialCurtis Hanson’s neo-noir crime drama It was established in the 1950s. It’s one of those movies that I knew I was going to like, but put it off. I finally sat down to stream it earlier this year, and unsurprisingly, I loved it.
Edmund Exley (Guy Pearce) is a hotshot rookie sergeant in the LAPD. Detective Jack Vincennes (Kevin Spacey) is more interested in raising his Hollywood profile than completing actual police work. Bud White (Russell Crowe) is a no-nonsense officer who repeatedly takes matters into his own hands. All three of these cops find themselves embroiled in a criminal investigation that exposes police corruption. It’s the stylish noir where the Los Angeles scene becomes the film’s greatest asset.
Working Girl
Mike Nichols directs one of the best rom-coms of the 1980s
If you ask people to name the movie that best represents the rom-com genre, When Harry meets Sally… is probably the most popular answer. I can’t argue with that answer. However, I am thinking of Working Girl, which came a year ago When Harry meets Sally… refers to the conversation.
Ambitious Tess McGill (Melanie Griffith) works as a secretary at a New York firm. Tess dreams of becoming a top executive, but gender stereotypes hold her back. Tess finds a new job as an assistant to her partner Katharine Parker (Sigourney Weaver). When Tess believes Katharine stole her idea, she decides to take matters into her own hands by pretending to be the boss when the latter’s leg injury requires hospitalization. Tess finds herself in trouble when a man (Harrison Ford) she’s trying to make a deal with becomes the object of her affections. Working Girl is the sum of its parts: a great cast, a compelling premise, and a a hopeful ending.
To live and die in LA
A dark, violent crime thriller from the 1980s
.
At first glance To live and die in LA stupid was the word that came to mind earlier this year. It’s a messy, sweaty film with complex characters doing questionable, sometimes immoral things. It’s definitely not my favoriteThe Exorcist William Friedkin film.
Days before retirement, Secret Service agent Jimmy Hart (Michael Greene) is murdered by master con artist Rick Masters (Willem Dafoe). His partner Richard Chance (William Petersen) is out for revenge and plans to bring Masters down. With a new partner (John Vukovich) at his side, Chance immerses himself in the criminal underbelly of Los Angeles in hopes of catching the Masters. I will never understand how Friedkin pulled off this car chase, one of cinema’s greatest achievements. To live and die in LA it’s neo-noir done right. Wang Chung shouted.
Manhunter
Michael Mann’s take on Hannibal
.
Never judge the quality of a movie by its box office. Manhunter It made less than $9 million on a $15 million budget. By all accounts, it was a box office bomb. Still, this is one of Michael Mann’s best works. The Silence of the Lambs is one Four of my favorite movies on Letterboxd. I didn’t know until a few years ago that Mann first brought Hannibal Lecter to the screen Manhunter.
Ex-FBI profiler Will Graham (William Petersen) is set back by Jack Crawford (Dennis Farina) to find a serial killer known as the Tooth Fairy (Tom Noonan). To catch the killer, Will seeks help: Hannibal Lecter (Brian Cox), the same man who attacked Will earlier and sent him into early retirement. After watching To live and die in LA and ManhunterHow was William Petersen not the biggest movie star? He is a fantastic leading man, especially in crime dramas. And with all due respect Red Dragon, Manhunter It’s a great movie.
