Nothing’s CMF Phone series has released two models so far and won’t be getting a third model until now, at least, as the rising cost of materials has left the series essentially dead in the water.
The CMF Phone series makes budget-oriented smartphones, as we mentioned in our hands-on coverage. a lot good values.
But, as is clearthe rising cost of components, especially RAM, affects budget devices more than anything else. And as a result, the CMF Phone is dead, at least for this year.
None co-founder and the man behind the CMF Phone series, Akis Evangelidis, Verified on Twitter/X partially explained that the next CMF Phone release was cancelled:
We’ve been working on a successor, but where memory prices are right now, we can’t build a phone that feels like a real step forward at a price that makes sense for CMF. As a result, we have decided not to release a new CMF phone this year.
In his next reply, he adds launching a device with the same characteristics as CMF Phone 2 Pro would cost about 50% more in today’s market. CMF Phone 2 Pro has it was out of stock quite a long time, probably due to the inflated cost of materials.
This comes just days after Nothing CEO Carl Pei he explained that RAM, memory, is now the single most expensive component in a smartphone build – this can it varies by device, but it’s still notable because Pei’s processor trumps the display and can account for “more than 50% of the total hardware bill.”
With no end in sight to RAMageddon, it seems unlikely that the CMF Phone will make a comeback anytime soon.
