Microsoft should copy a new feature in Windows 11 that makes multitasking easier. But rather than Sherlocking a third-party app, Microsoft should simply copy the concept proposed for its own app, PowerToys.
Every now and then a feature is added to PowerToys that makes me wonder “why isn’t this part of Windows?” FancyZones immediately comes to mind, and Microsoft agrees, as improved snapping in Windows 11 is inspired by this feature.
PowerToys may have another winner in AltWindowCycle, though it may need a new name.
The utility allows you to switch between windows with a keyboard shortcut. It’s similar to Alt + Tab, but works within an application. Clint Rutkas explained the tool in a GitHub pull request:
“Introduces a new utility: AltWindowCycle to quickly switch between windows from the same process using the Alt + ` keys. It works like Alt + Tab, but it matches the app you’re already in. Perfect for juggling multiple browser windows, terminals or editor instances.”
AltWindowCycle is still in its infancy. If it ends up being part of PowerToys, I hope it makes it to Windows 11 too.
If it becomes part of Windows 11, AltWindowCycle will help Microsoft’s operating system catch up with macOS and some systems. Linux distros that use Alt + \` or Cmd + ` to cycle between windows of the same program, albeit slightly differently.
Many of PowerToys’ features are niche, and if included in Windows 11, would be viewed as bloat by unsuspecting users. But a little shortcut that makes multitasking easier would be a natural addition to Windows 11, especially since AltWindowCycle works similarly to the popular Alt + Tab shortcut.
