The 2026 XBOX Games Expo was full of interesting game revelations from AAA studios and independent teams Ditto, but there was one particular statement that I couldn’t stop thinking about. I recognized the art style as soon as the large purple text and wonderfully strange bird-like creatures appeared on the screen. Everyone’s favorite little purple dragon has faced a new foe, albeit with a slightly more mature redesign featuring some new gameplay mechanics.
Toys were provided for Bob Spyro: A Realm Beyond Goodbye gliding, hello flying in a slick cinematic trailer complete with an earthquake for our hero’s newest skill. Spyro can be seen flying in the air with his new ability: he flies freely through the arches of the bridge and collects orbs in the sky of a world saturated with beautiful colors, where the threat of a dark and mysterious great misfortune lurks above the clouds.
Revelations for Spyro: A Realm Beyond didn’t shy away from success. The cinematic reveal trailer on Spyro The Dragon’s YouTube channel has garnered over 16 million views in just two weeks. Add another million when you combine the views on the XBOX, Nintendo and PlayStation channels.
But Spyro’s successful revival almost didn’t happen. For Bob, toys had to return to their independent roots after being targeted for closure by Activision to give the lovable purple dragon big boy wings.
The path taken by Toys for Bob – avoiding closure and pivoting to become an independent studio that continues to work to publish its next game in partnership with Activision and XBOX – may just be the solution that can save studios. A remarkable history that led to a radical plan
Few game studios are forced to see their 35th anniversary. With the turbulent state of the gaming industry today, this elite club seems even more elusive. But Toys for Bob, originally founded in 1989 and operating as a partnership between founders Paul Reiche III and Fred Ford until the pair entered the studio in 2002, somehow didn’t just make it past the 35-year mark — it’s passed that milestone and continues to create a fascinating and meaningful fascination for the digital world.
However, the story of Toys for Bob is one of resilience. In 1990, the studio changed the landscape of science fiction games with the release of Star Control, followed by Accolade, Inc. as its publisher. and was followed by Star Control II in 1992 with Crystal Dynamics. Toys for Bob continued its partnership with Crystal Dynamics until the early 2000s, when it was dropped following the release of Disney’s 102 Dalmatians: Puppies to the Rescue.

The studio found a new publisher in Activision and was fully purchased by the publisher in 2005. Later, Activision merged Toys for Bob with Vivendi Games. Spyro At that time, the IP prepared the studio to launch the Skylanders series and pioneer the toys-to-life game genre. “During that time we had a fantastic, successful partnership.“Toys for Bob studio head Paul Yan said recently IGN interview. Bob’s toys with Spyro didn’t end there as they released the Spyro Reignited Trilogy in 2018.
After its incredibly successful release Call of Duty: Warzone In March 2020, however, things changed for the studio as Activision began allocating their entire studio team to the resource-based free-to-play battle royale. For Bob, the toys took their place as part of the dozen-plus studio machines that fueled it Call of Duty in addition to providing support for Overwatch 2 and other Activision properties.

“Toys for Bob stepped up to support those initiatives, those teams, and those games. We’re very proud of what we did, but deep down we knew it wasn’t the right fit. We were moving away from the types of games that we love to play and play the most.” said Jan.
Activision was later acquired by Microsoft in 2022. Despite the previous statements Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer on the potential for studios to revive past IPsToys for Bob still found its studio offices closed in January 2024 amid massive layoffs affecting 1,900 jobs across Microsoft’s workforce. Just four months later, Toys for Bob successfully separated from Activision and regained its independence.
How to save a game development studio with Toys for Bob
For Bob’s plan, the toys were unseen. Take back your independence. Take back creative, financial and organizational control. And keep his permanent team. It depended on Spyro’s past successes for the plan to succeed. The team presented a new Spyro title published by Activision and XBOX and planned to launch from day one. Two years after its independence, the Spyro: A Realm Beyond trailer shown during the XBOX Showcase feels like a step in the right direction for a radical plan for independence.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. XBOX has a new CEO with fresh eyes for the company’s future, but rising hardware prices and ballooning development costs are weighing on the bottom line. We’re told a “hard reset” is on the horizon. Microsoft-owned studios like Ninja Theory and Compulsion Games are the new sacrificial lambs sitting on the proverbial slaughtering block despite strong showings. Studio closures are a blight on the gaming industry. Studios are often formed from teams organically coming together to bring a creative vision to life, and then these studios are picked up by publishers who promise financial security. Then, when the tides of a volatile industry change, the studio closes and the creative talent developed is dispersed among other studios, where the cycle begins again. This is without considering the talent that has simply left the gaming industry altogether.
Spyro: A Realm Beyond was more than just a game announcement. It felt like a victory lap for independent game development and a survival plan for how studios could keep things together even in a shutdown.
should be Asha Sharma consider taking any page Phil SpencerAs CEO, I hope that’s what makes it worthwhile to take on Toys for Bob, so that studios facing closure can continue to see a chance to stand on their own and create what they love. When studios like Toys for Bob are able to keep creative teams together instead of returning to their independent roots and finding locks on studio doors, consumers win.
If successful, it could serve as a roadmap for studios, such as a radical plan that would allow Toys for Bob to become an indie studio with creative control. If Ninja Theory and Compulsion Games are rumored to be coming together turn right. If there’s one thing the games industry could use right now, it’s radical plans for independence paying off.
