Times are changing and it seems the World Power Consortium (WPC) wants to adapt Qi2 to what consumers are looking for.
He informed about this ITHome (China) was to discuss the future of the wireless charging standard at the WPC’s Qi Off-Cycle meeting at Xiaomi’s headquarters in Beijing (via 9 to 5 Google). In particular, Xiaomi is leading the future of Qi2 by pursuing the 50W charging standard. The publication states that Xiaomi is primarily focused on “small inductance, low voltage, high power solutions” (machine translation). Each of these is said to have a direct impact on safety/charging efficiency, loss of coil module and more.
In short, what this new 50W direction wants to solve is “high power wireless charging”.
The publication reports that the meeting was attended by Xiaomi, as well as “more than 20 companies” working with it to develop the Qi2 wireless standard, and the WPC. The companies met in Beijing to talk about Qi2’s 50W “interoperability verification” and highlight the prototype testing phase. These companies have been encouraged to continue working together to deliver 50W so the market (and consumers) can see it in their future phones.
But nothing official yet. Right now, what Xiaomi and its partners are working on is just the foundation. It has been reported that the Qi2 50W could become a reality by 2028 following Xiaomi’s partnership with local companies.

It’s all about giving users options, right? But why are you looking at or thinking about a wireless charger when you see that wired charging is still the best way to go? Xiaomi and its partners and other companies related to WPC and Qi2 see this problem and are actively working to solve it. It’s pretty obvious that this will take some time, but it’s probably worth it.
Let’s not forget that in July 2025 WPC announced Qi2 v2.2.1. The version numbers are equivalent to wireless charging available today: 25W. WPC emphasized that this new version is “more powerful” than the original Qi2. The main consumer criticism of wireless charging is its speed. They are slow. The latest 25W version aimed to fix this, but has yet to achieve it.
The charging speed used to stay at 15W, but now it is 25W. However, if Xiaomi has anything to say about it, things won’t stay there for long. It is not happy with 25W charging and neither are consumers. At the time, iPhones were among the first to bring it to their consumers, and Android manufacturers soon adopted it. There’s a chance we’ll see a similar event when the Qi2 50W arrives.
WPC was also sure of it more android phones Qi2 was seeing, and that’s thanks to Google and Samsung.
