Anthropic is upgrading the Claude Sonnet, replacing the Sonnet 4.6 with the Sonnet 5 from February as the best mid-size model.
Claude Sonnet 5 arrived as “the most agent Sonnet model ever”.
In the Anthropic universe, Sonnet is Claude’s mid-sized AI model, sitting between the smaller Haiku model and the larger Opus model.
“Claude Sonnet 5 is designed to be the most agent Sonnet model yet. It can make plans, use tools like browsers and terminals, and work autonomously at a level that required larger and more expensive models just a few months ago,” the company said.
“Sonnet 5 closes the gap: its performance is close to that of Opus 4.8, but at lower cost. It is a significant improvement over its predecessor, Sonnet 4.6, in important aspects of agent performance such as reasoning, tool usage, coding, and knowledge work.”
Sonnet 5 is the new standard model for Claude free and professional users
Today’s Sonnet 5 release is standard for both Free and Pro Claude users, Anthropic says. The company also has a special introductory price that runs until August 31.
“Claude Sonnet 5 is available everywhere today at an introductory price of $2 for one million entry tokens and $10 for one million exit tokens until August 31, 2026,” the company said.
“Then it switches to a default price of $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. We’ve increased the rate limits on Chat, Cowork, Claude Code and Claude Platform to enable higher token usage of higher effort levels; users can choose the level that makes sense for their project,” Anthropic adds.
Anthropic also has the most capable Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models. Mythos 5 has fewer safeguards for select security researchers and platform owners.
Fable 5 is a more secure version that was available to customers for a short time before being blocked by the US government. Anthropic said it is working on restoring access in the future.
Closing the case 4.8 came at the end of May. Claude Tale 5 followed a few days later before being drawn. There is a Mythos 5 partially restored to select customers.
