Sony made a controversial decision Ax production of physical PlayStation games in 2028led to a massive debate about game conservation and whether piracy is the only way to preserve them.
The decision was met with universal vitriol by gamers, and the company joked about it on social media that it was ultimately Sony shooting itself in the foot.

Even some of us at Windows Central are puzzled by Sony’s decision: “What’s the point of a discless console?” because PC gaming offers more ways to protect games and allow players to own their purchased games without DRM restrictions GOGfor example.
In fact, it’s gotten a lot of attention when big brand companies inside and outside of the gaming industry have started giving various responses to Sony on social media, mocking the company while supporting gamers who prefer physical media.
First, Domino’s Pizza gave this humorous response mocking Sony’s X decision, implying that they would. “Discontinuing physical pizzas and switching to digital-only pizzas” and he says that “Consumers will be able to download our full range of delicious pizza codes and use the power of their imagination to enjoy them in a completely virtual sense.”
One of Domino’s Pizza’s biggest competitors, KFC responded similarly on the Spanish X accountthrough translation, saying “BREAKING NEWS: KFC will stop offering its physical format from today. Its products can only be consumed through its app in fake PNG format.”
VPN company ProtonVPN has also responded with a rather hilarious prank announcement on X, saying that it will make its services completely physical starting April 1, 2027.
It will send intelligent staff to your current location to send FAQs and technical support and encrypted letters by mail, among other ridiculous services designed to mock Sony’s decision.
Not all responses are entirely satirical, however. Online rental retailer GameFly has reached out to X to announce its disappointment with Sony’s decision to ax physical PlayStation games.
He believes in the power of physical entertainment media and will continue to support gamers and collectors who prefer physical media: “We’re committed to renting physical media, whether it’s games or movies, until we rip the discs from our soft, moist hands.”
Game collector and vinyl dealer, iam8bit, Sony expressed similar frustration with this decision regarding the X. iam8bit says physical games are an important part of game preservation, ownership and consumer choice, values ββthe retailer has believed in for a decade and will continue to proudly shout “Long live physical media”.
No doubt many more companies will be hitting back at Sony over this industry-changing decision, both satirical and serious, in the coming weeks.
But will these answers, as well as the massive backlash from gamers, cause Sony to reverse its decision and reverse its own? An equally controversial decision to close the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita digital stores?
Stay tuned to see if more companies have similar responses to Sony’s decision, and as we continue to develop further on what Sony plans to do next.
