From The Wire and Friday Night Lights He won Best Actor for his performance in Michael B. Jordan on Hollywood’s biggest night. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. Or should we say “performances”? Jordan plays twin brothersIn the movie Smoke and Stack, whose dream of opening a juke joint is destroyed by a pesky horde of vampires.
Jordan beat out one of the amazing actors, including taking home the trophy Timothée Chalamet for Marty SupremeFor Leonardo DiCaprio One battle after anotherFor Ethan Hawke blue moon, and for Wagner Moura Secret Agent. At various points throughout awards season, Chalamet, DiCaprio and Moura were considered potential front-runners, but in recent weeks, Jordan has surged ahead, especially after winning an award from the Screen Actors Guild.
There are a few things about this win that are extra exciting, though. First of all, Jordan is simply incredible. In Sinnerssure, but throughout his amazing career. We have already mentioned his first roles in classic showso Tel and Friday Night Lightsbut he has been good at many other things too, e.g the Creed trilogy, Black Panther moviesFruitvale Station, Just Mercy, and Chronicle. He’s just awesome, especially when he’s working with Ryan Coogler.
Secondly, such universal recognition of horror films is very rare. you have to go back The Silence of the Lambs to find a horror-like film that has won such major awards. That was 35 years ago. (Fantasy and science fiction often do better.) Also, films in which an actor plays more than one role are almost never recognized. It’s almost like the Academy looks at actors playing two or more roles and doesn’t think it’s fair. So we love that Jordan is getting an award for playing these brothers.
Sinners Sunday has the most Oscar nominations ever for a film, but you have to think that it’s one of the few films that the team behind it is circling as the most important.
