NewPipe, another open source app, prepares users for Google’s Android sideloading operation

Sideloading, or the ability to install apps using APK files from outside the Google Play Store, has been a staple of Android since the early days. But almost two decades later, Google wants to change that, citing security issues with unverified apps. The Android developer community opposed it Android’s new sideloading rulesargues they are contrary to practices that serve the best interests of users. Now, a number of popular apps have started to resist the upcoming policy and are informing users about alternatives.

The developers behind it have recently began to inform users of the upcoming policy change and how it will affect them and whether they will be subject to the new rules.

Starting this September, Google will require developers to sign up for a developer account, verify their identity using a valid ID, and pay a $25 fee. While Android users still have the option to sideload apps from developers who choose not to sign up for Google’s program, installing APKs will require going through some hassles, including a 24-hour waiting block before installing “unverified” apps. However, those who are confident in its use can permanently enable sideloading for all apps after waiting for the 24-hour window to expire once.
