After months of testing on Android, Meta is bringing guest chats to beta testers on iOS and the web. This is how it will work.
Guest chats are now available to a limited number of beta testers
As seen WABetaInfoIn iOS TestFlight and web beta, some WhatsApp users get access to guest chats.
The feature, which first appeared for Android beta testers last August, allows WhatsApp users start chatting with people who don’t have an account.
With guest chats, users can create a chat link from the “Invite a Friend” section and share it via SMS or other apps. When the link is opened, a secure chat session via WhatsApp Web starts.

After users continue as a guest, WhatsApp generates a unique identifier that is used to generate a Web encryption key. This means that guest chats are protected by end-to-end encryption. WhatsApp cannot see the content of the messages and they can only be read by the chat participants.

This means that the guest needs to open the link, accept WhatsApp’s terms and conditions, enter their name and start chatting. The main thing is that anyone who receives the invitation code can join the conversation.
As soon as the conversation starts, WhatsApp adds the tag “(Guest)” to their name and adds a disclaimer saying “Not registered on WhatsApp”. Of course, guests can create an account. This is likely the main driver behind this feature, as WhatsApp remains less popular in markets like the US, despite its widespread use elsewhere.
Currently, the feature does not support group chats, voice messages, attachments, stickers, GIFs, voice and video calls. Additionally, guest chats will currently expire after 10 days of inactivity.
The feature is currently available to a limited number of beta testers on iOS, Android, and the web, with no timeline for a wider rollout.
