This is one of the most interesting psychological thrillers I’ve watched on Netflix to date May December. Directed by a powerful duo of leads (Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore), this dark story follows actress Elizabeth Berry (Portman) as she travels to Georgia to learn about the life and nature of her upcoming film, Gracie Atherton-Yoon (Moore).
Gracie is a sex offender whose relationship with Joe caused a national scandal (Beef Charles Melton); their 24-year relationship began when she was 13 and he was 36. Decades later, the couple tries to lead a seemingly normal suburban life with their children. But Elizabeth’s arrival disrupts their seemingly peaceful dynamic, and Elizabeth herself slowly crosses the boundaries of every person in Gracie’s life.
May December it’s a pretty uncomfortable watch, but the lead performances paint portraits of characters that are hard to look away from.

Spike Lee’s unique take on action dramas
For this week’s dose an epic war dramatry this unique option. Da 5 Bloods Returning to Vietnam decades later, four Black Vietnam War veterans follow former gang leader Norman to retrieve Norman’s remains, as well as the buried gold junk they left behind during the war.
As they go deeper into the jungle, old tensions resurface and the mission slowly turns into something dangerous. Spike Lee mixes war drama, political commentary, and personal character study in a way that keeps the story feeling constantly tense. The film also features one of Chadwick Boseman’s final performances and is his last film released during his lifetime.

The Lost Girl
A twisted story of two mothers
The Lost GirlMaggie Gyllenhaal’s feature directorial debut is a beautifully shot and well-executed psychological drama. It is based on the 2006 novel by Elena Ferrante and is packed with a strong cast including Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Jessie Buckley, Paul Mescal and Dagmara Dominczyk.
It tells the story of Leda, a college professor who travels alone to a quaint beach town in Greece for a vacation that quickly turns emotionally disturbing. After a young mother observes Nina and her daughter on the beach, Leda begins to reflect on her years as a mother. The film soon reveals Leda’s character as she becomes entangled with Nina.
The Lost Girl it was well received by critics and audiences alike. At the 94th Academy Awards, the film received three nominations: Best Actress (Coleman), Best Supporting Actress (Buckley) and Best Adapted Screenplay.

I lost my body
A scary story to find your way back home
If you haven’t seen it cartoon after a while, I lost my body could be a great (albeit annoying) watch. The French film follows a severed hand that escapes from a laboratory refrigerator and traverses Paris in search of the body it once belonged to. At the same time, the film focuses on the owner of the hand, Naoufel, a lonely young man who struggles with grief and regret. Told in flashbacks, the hand continues its journey depicting Naoufel’s life from childhood to the present day.
The film was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 92nd Academy Awards. I lost my body is a quirky yet captivating watch with a story and animation that will keep you hooked throughout.

Athlete A
A powerful story about one of sports’ greatest controversies
Athlete A a powerful and well-told Netflix documentary that gets even sadder the deeper it goes. The film is about investigative journalists from The Indianapolis Star magazine who uncovered the abuse scandal involving former US gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar. The documentary begins with a newspaper article showing USAG (USA Gymnastics) president Steve Penny working to defend abusive coaches as victims come forward one by one.
Along with powerful reporting by journalists, the documentary allows survivors to share their experiences and explain how powerful institutions swept up complaints and allowed abuse for years. The documentary’s title refers to gymnast Maggie Nichols, who was referred to as “Athlete A” to protect her identity during the ongoing investigation into her sexual abuse by Nassar.
