99% less sticky than Nest Audio


Google’s environmental reports Speaker of the House Here’s a look at how the new Gemini device is made and pictures of the internals.

According to the company, the Google Home Speaker “features a tensioned 3D knit body wrapped around a plastic body without any glue.” Recycled Materials Guide since March. So you can partially stretch the recycled polyester and spandex yarn while picking up the device.

The Nest Mini found that the piece was “attached to the speaker housing with significant adhesive.” Compared to Nest Audio, this Home Speaker “uses approximately 63% less material and 99% less glue” (Product Environmental Report).

This new approach allows for “manufacturing rework”: “If a defect is detected in a three-dimensional fabric or plastic body during assembly, the other part can still be used, reducing both material yield waste and cost.”

Overall, the Google Home Speaker is made from “at least 37% recycled materials” (based on product weight). This includes metal, rare earth materials and plastic, and packaging uses bamboo, molded fiber and recycled newsprint.

Google’s report shows that the cloth is lying on a plastic body underneath. Supposedly, we see three cutouts for the far-field microphones. A 58mm full-range driver can also be considered.

Another image shows a motherboard with quad-core A55 (2.0 GHz), NPU, 1 GB LPDDR4 RAM and 4 GB eMMC storage.

The included 30W USB-C adapter—a miniaturized version of Google’s 45W version—meets DOE Level VI, “the highest efficiency rating available for power adapters as defined by the International Efficiency Marking Protocol for External Power Supplies Version 3.0.”

On the repairability front, it would be nice if the USB-C cable wasn’t permanently attached to the Home Speaker.
