We say goodbye to Sora. To everyone who co-creates, shares, and builds a community around Sora: thank you. What you did with Sora was important and we know this news is disappointing.
We’ll share more information soon, including timelines for the app and API, and details about protecting your work.
An explanation for why is not mentioned at all NBC News speculates that “the shutdown of the resource-intensive AI application comes before OpenAI’s expected initial public offering.”
Sora was launched in the second half of 2024, but was not widely expanded until 2025. The Android app wasn’t released until November 2025 following updates to the Sora model that produced more realistic video generations.
The news also completely closes an earlier agreement between Disney and OpenAI that allowed Sora to use Disney IP in user-suggested videos. The contract would also be extended to create a ChatGPT image, but the contract is now dead. He said this in his statement to Disney Diversity:
As the emerging field of artificial intelligence rapidly evolves, we respect OpenAI’s decision to exit the video production business and shift its priorities elsewhere. We value the constructive collaboration between our teams and the learnings from it, and we will continue to engage with AI platforms to find new ways to meet fans where they are, while responsibly approaching new technologies that respect IP and creators’ rights.
