Of all the areas that AI affects in our daily lives, I think the effect it has on augmentation in video games feels the most magical. When done right, it allows you to play your games at better frame rates without sacrificing any visual fidelity. While some eagle-eyed enthusiasts may be able to see the difference between local and premium play, it’s now getting frighteningly close.
When the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X was first announced, the tech company promised consumers that it would eventually get Microsoft’s Auto SR technology. Well, after just six months, the feature has finally arrived in the preview section, and you should see up to 30% better framerates when you turn it on.
Asus ROG Xbox Ally X’s Auto SR technology is now available for preview
Hopefully, it will be ready for general release soon
as announced in Microsoft Dev BlogsAuto SR is now available on the Xbox Insider branch for the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X. On the face of it, Auto SR works very similarly to other enhancement technologies; the idea is that you’re running the game at a lower resolution than normal, and Auto SR scales it the best it can. Ideally, this means you get all the benefits of running the game at a lower resolution than you actually do without seeing game with a lower resolution.
You can see the technology above working. Left is the game running natively at 1440p on the ROG Xbox Ally X, managing 35-40 FPS. On the right, the game runs at a lower resolution, with Auto SR upscaling it to 1440p. This side runs at a steady 46-50 FPS and to be honest, I’m really struggling to see any visual difference between the two sides. Indeed, it seems like you get both high FPS and good visual quality at the same time.
Currently, Xbox Insiders can only use Auto SR when the console is docked, and for good reason:
Docked gaming means bigger screens and higher resolutions, where the drop in image quality is more noticeable or some games struggle to maintain a smooth FPS. That’s exactly the problem Auto SR is designed to solve, so we’re starting the preview with docked mode, which is where we expect players to see the most value.
