Anthropic Gets $5B From Amazon, Promises $100B In Cloud Spending

anthropic announced on Monday, Amazon agreed to invest a new $5 billion, bringing Amazon’s total investment in the company to $13 billion. Anthropic, in turn, has agreed to spend more than $100 billion on AWS over the next 10 years to acquire up to 5 GW of new computing power to train and run Cloud.

The deal with Amazon’s OpenAI just two months ago, a $110 billion funding round – $50 billion contribution – this valued the ChatGPT maker at a pre-money valuation of $730 billion. This deal is also partly structured as cloud infrastructure services rather than outright cash.

At the heart of this deal are Amazon’s custom chips: Graviton (a low-power CPU) and Trainium (an Nvidia competitor and AI accelerator chip). The Anthropic deal covers Trainium4 chips through Trainium2, although Trainium4 chips are not currently available. The latest chip, Trainium3, was released in December. Additionally, Anthropic has provided the option to purchase capacity once future Amazon chips become available.

We’ll see if this news is a teaser for Anthropic announcing a new funding round. VCs are reportedly offering capital to an AI company estimated at 800 billion dollars or more.
