As global AI companies increasingly tailor their offerings to win over users in the world’s most populous country, Anthropic has begun localizing Claude’s pricing in India, its largest market outside the US.
For some users in India, local pricing has started appearing on Clod’s website and mobile apps. However, Anthropic is yet to enable payments through Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India’s widely used instant payments network. Users must still pay by card or through Apple and Google’s app store billing systems. This is different from OpenAI ChatGPT has provided Indian Rupee rates in August with UPI support.
There are Claude users in India searched for a long time subscriptions denominated in rupees, which add friction to accessing the service with dollar prices and currency conversion. The move is particularly significant because India considers 5.8% of global Claude usageAccording to Anthropic, it becomes the service’s second largest market after the US.
On Claude’s website in India, Anthropic lists the Claude Pro at ₹2,000 (about $21) per year, compared to $17 per month in the US, while the Claude Max starts at ₹11,999 (about $125) per month in India and $109 in the US. (about $25) Indian prices include local taxes per seat per month compared to $20 in the US. Moreover, the prices on Claude’s mobile apps differ slightly from those listed on its website.

The Indian rupee valuation comes amid Anthropic’s increased focus on India. The clad manufacturer opened an office in Bangalore in February announces movement in October and January Former Managing Director of Microsoft India has been appointed Irina Ghose will lead its business in the country. Anthropic also collaborates with Indian IT services giants Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services in recent months, the enterprise intends to expand its applications of artificial intelligence.
This expansion failed when Anthropic in June abruptly stopped logging in following the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for non-US organizations has led some Indian developers and startup founders to consider alternatives to American AI models. Fable 5 has a limitation after liftingthough access to Mythos 5 remains limited.
India has become an increasingly important market for AI companies, with a large base of developers and technology workers. However, converting widespread usage to paid subscriptions remains a challenge in a price-sensitive market.
Anthropic did not respond to a request for comment on the implementation of Indian rupee pricing.
