TL;DR
- Last week, the US government issued an emergency national security order that forced Anthropic to globally pull its flagship Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models.
- Anthropic’s International Managing Director has now revealed that the company is “very confident” the models will be back on sale in the coming days.
- Reports claim the freeze stems from US concerns about South Korean partner SK Telecom’s inclusion in Project Glasswing due to alleged ties to China.
Speaking at a press conference in Seoul, Mr. Chris Ciauri, Anthropic’s International Managing Director, said the company is “very confident that the models will be back on sale in the coming days.” Korea JoongAng Daily.
The event in South Korea was originally intended to celebrate Anthropic’s expansion in the region. However, questions about recent export controls and Anthropic’s Project Glasswing program (which only grants Mythos 5 access to select entities) dominated the discussion. The executive declined to comment on most questions about the shutdown.
US government security concerns focus more on Mythos 5. Unlike more consumer-oriented models, Mythos 5 is heavily guarded due to its advanced ability to scan, identify and fix critical vulnerabilities in highly complex, supposedly unbreakable codebases. In the hands of a bad actor, the same ability to detect and exploit critical infrastructure flaws can be reversed. To manage this risk, Anthropic has restricted Mythos’ access to an exclusive corporate cybersecurity initiative called Project Glasswing.
Project Glasswing has about 150 partners, including Google, NVIDIA, Microsoft and Apple, according to Anthropic. However, Wired The US export controls came after a dispute with Anthropic over allowing South Korean telecom giant SK Telecom into Project Glasswing and giving it access to Claude Mythos 5. Citing “people familiar with the matter,” the report said U.S. officials were concerned about SK Telecom’s alleged ties to SK Telecom.
Antopi declined to comment Wiredof The White House and SK Telecom did not respond to the news. A representative of SK Telecom informed South Korea about this Chosun Daily“There are no confirmed facts in the statements made by the anonymous insider in the foreign media, and our company has nothing to do with China.”
To pay customers currently locked out of Anthropic’s most capable systems, the focus now turns to whether the company’s incoming regional security and security patches will be enough to appease Washington and bring models back online soon.
